PALIN AND BIDEN ON DICK CHENEY

Like him or not, Biden cites credible examples (on both sides) of policies that directly affect all Americans.

Sarah Palin, on the other hand, when given a opportunity to showcase herself to voters, chooses Cheney's infamous duck hunting accident as his "worst moment". It's a response that you'd expect someone to give Jay Leno in a "Jaywalking" segment - not one befitting someone who aspires to the highest office in the United States. It's also interesting that Cheney is largely ignored in the "best thing" answer. Rather she lavishes attention on George W. Bush's support of families of fallen soldiers, and attempts to tie Cheney through his support for such acts.

If there's any true depth to Sarah Palin - she clearly chooses to hide it behind this "aw shucks" caricature that she showcases again and again for Katie Couric.

Uh... voting for Barack and all that... but does Biden actually know the correct name of his running mate??? That was WEIRD.

Ha! As an editor myself, there's no way to put words in someone's mouth.

Palin was scripted tonight. Answering questions the way she wanted to? That's also called "ignoring" a question where I come from.

Straight talk express! Choo Choo!

I would think you boys would be giddy that SP demonstrated she can take AND give "IT".

Stupid is as Stupid does? Apparently, not.

Many years back, (groan, another story), when I found myself lobbying an initiative petition to the Oregon legislature for needed reform to the inherent risk law. Our very small group (4) were dismissed as having, not so much as a snowball's chance in H*** of getting liability injury limits past the mega-powerful, Oregon Trial Lawyers Assn.

Especially, considering we were attempting the passage into law, in one legislative session. The lone pro bono attorney (incidently from Eugene) who wrote the language of the law, advised and cautioned us as to the dismal prospects and probable unsuccessful outcome.

BUT, because the law resonated with so many, as common sense, we were able to build the "largest grass roots effort yet see in the Oregon legislative history", in the six months we had. After Gov Roberts signing, our surprised, PB attorney related, "The total effort was recognized as a bunch of hicks decending on the capitol", but what they failed to understand was,...it wasn't a bunch of DUMB hicks" I never forgot the lesson.

As a result, inherent risk legislation became law and I, as a volunteer, (some call them community organizers) was able to continue as an equestrian coach to Special Olympics, 4-H, FFA and to continue our summer program for the American Cancer Society's camp for children and their siblings.

NO ONE, and I mean, NO ONE, was willing to take on the trial lawyers (who make a very good living off sueing insurance companies)..and were not one bit happy that mere citizens would dare to limit their ability to earn a living as full time ambulance chasers!

All this to say, I learned a lot about people, both well educated, and many, who were not, (in fact, I believe myself and the attorney may have been the only college educated).... there is an authentic quality that comes through all of the BS. There are good people in the world from all walks in life, and I believe, is what I, and others, see with Sarah Palin.

That, and her flag pin was biggest!

Love, from one of the Hicks! AL

AL,

You just typed an answer that's 10-times as coherent as anything Sarah Palin has said (on her own) during this campaign. Don't drag yourself down to her level.

Sarah Palin can read a teleprompter and recite pre-written answers to questions that weren't asked. However, when she goes "off script" she's a nightmare.

Again, Katie Couric may have asked her tough questions like, "What magazines and newspapers do you read?" But trying to blame her pathetic performance on "editing" is a lost cause - at least for me.

As well, when she went off script last night (on gay rights, and bankruptcy protection) the McCain Campaign has had to rebuke what she said.

She apparently doesn't know much of her ticket's positions on issues, or her running mate's record on many issues.

Do many people relate to her "folksy" way of talking? Sure. But if people are willing to elect someone on that basis alone - we're in bigger trouble than anyone ever thought.

I really took the reluctance about naming what she read as not wanting to endorse (for any reason) any particular news source.

What if she said Fox News or CNN?? I don't recall any other candidate being asked the same, stupid questions...why was it given such importance?? Pardon her if she was suspicious? She is a conservative, I would guess that she reads conservative sources? So what?

I get your point, and I/and you, I suspect, would have awnsered differently, but I have to say given the "gotcha" treatment by Charles Gibson...I wouldn't blame her for being wary of Couric. Why Couric felt it necessary to ask such trivial questions? I do believe that clever editing can make people appear to sound/say unflattering things. Biden's gaffs?

Only a few more weeks and it'll be over....for better or worse. At least we hope it's over! However, with all of the potential voter fraud (on both sides) being in the news, we may have months to go :(

Love, AL

She was asked what newspapers and magazines that she regularly read before she was asked to be V.P., and therefore the Fox News or CNN answer would have raised some eyebrows.

Also, I don't think it's an outrageous question at all to ask a potential world leader. My father-in-law says some crazy stuff from time to time and I always ask, "Where did you hear that from?"

There are very few newspapers or magazines that would raise an eyebrow with anyone. Heck, even if she reference the National Review or the Washington Times, there's still some journalistic integrity.

It scared the hell out of me in 2003 when Bush admitted he didn't read any newspapers, but rather "relied on his aides" for all his information.

This "non-answer" from Palin strikes a similar chord in me. She has past comments about "not knowing much about the Surge" and therefore made the question pertinent to myself.

Hardcore conservatives will rally around anything Sarah Palin does or says, but if she thinks she can remain a blank slate and convince independents to back her - I think she's in for a rude awakening.
