McCAIN THINKS HE'S FOUND SOMETHING?

You just knew the McCain campaign was watching Barack Obama's whirlwind trip last week looking for something... anything to use against him. Well, it looks like they've decided to go in this direction:

The funny part is that the first three points are largely a laugh. First, admittedly Obama never held a meeting on Afghanistan, but at least he attended one. It turns out that Mr. McCain (the top Republican on the Senate Armed Service Committee) ducked out of all SIX Afghan-related meetings in the last two years. Wow, I guess "runnin' for President" is time consuming, huh?

Second, he hadn't been to Iraq in years? Well duh. Wasn't that the whole point of THIS trip? Republican's badgered his lack of time in the Middle East, so he went. Oh, and while he was there... the Iraqi Prime Minister happened to agree on his timetable for U.S. withdrawl. Doesn't it stink when you create a democracy, and then they start using that newfound freedom to assert themselves?

Third, McCain and company tries to play the "voted against the troops" card against Obama. But couldn't the same be done to McCain? After all, he voted against HR 1571 (funding for Iraq & Afghanistan, with additional funds to Veterans Affairs), and has voted three other times against funding for medical treatment of wounded soliders. Now I'm sure there's nuances that caused each of these votes, which makes it all the more sleazy to use them in a one-sentence campaign commercial.

However, perhaps the most troubling is the last charge leveled by McCain in this new commercial. In it, he implies that Obama decided to "make time" for going the gym instead of visiting wounded troops. However, the footage used of Obama during this portion of the commercial is from an actual visit with the troops in Kuwait, when he sunk his now famous three-pointer. But the "cancelled trip" happened nearly a week later, and apparently had nothing to do with "cameras not being allowed" (notice the lack of source there) as the ad says.

In fact, it turns out that the military themselves may have stopped the visit:

I think everyone can agree that soldiers should not be used as pawns for political gain, right? In fact, McCain himself came up against this issue just a few months ago during his visits of U.S. Naval Bases, in which he complied with the Department of Defence.

In addition, the military makes it VERY clear:
“The U.S. military must remain apolitical at all times and in all ways,” wrote the chairman, Adm. Mike Mullen, the nation’s highest-ranking officer. “It is and must always be a neutral instrument of the state, no matter which party holds sway.”
But I guess if McCain is grasping for something to take the wind out of his opponents sails after a highly publicized trip, then nothing is out of bounds.

Did I mention that McCain's new ad is simply titled "Troops"? McCain is an honorable man... to bad he's running a less than honorable campaign.

The non-partisan Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America gave McCain a D+ for his voting record (Obama recieved a B+). And this was before he so famously opposed Jim Webb's G.I. Bill. Likewise, the Disabled Vets of America gave him a 20% rating (Obama's: 80%) Strange how "Straight Talk" McCain is claiming Obama doesn't support the troops because he missed one hospital visit.

Makes you wonder if Golden Boy Johnny is simply forgetting his voting record and making, in his mind, a valid political point. Or has he become just another political scumbag.
